What is Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana)?

Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana, is a mandatory charity given by Muslims at the end of Ramadan before the Eid prayer. It is traditionally given in the form of food so that those in need can enjoy Eid without worrying about hunger. Zakat al-Fitr must be given before the Eid prayer, although it can be paid anytime during Ramadan.

When you give your Zakat al-Fitr through Projects for Humanity, we purchase and distribute food to families in need locally so they can experience the joy of Eid with their families.

Why is Zakat al-Fitr Paid?

Zakat al-Fitr carries deep spiritual and social wisdom. It was prescribed by the Prophet ﷺ to purify the fast and ensure that no one is left behind on the day of Eid al-Fitr.

Its key purposes include:

• Spiritual Purification
It purifies the fasting person from shortcomings during Ramadan, such as idle talk or mistakes.

• Supporting the Poor
It provides essential food for those in need so that struggling families can also enjoy the day of Eid without worrying about hunger.

• Completing the Fast
The Companion Abdullah ibn Abbas narrated that Muhammad prescribed Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person and as food for the poor.

• Expressing Gratitude to Allah
It is a way of thanking Allah for granting us the ability to complete the month of fasting.

This beautiful act of charity strengthens compassion, solidarity, and care within the Muslim community, ensuring that everyone can share in the joy of Eid.

How Much is Zakat al-Fitr?

At the time of the Prophet ﷺ, the required amount was one Saaʿ of staple food, such as dates, barley, raisins, or wheat.

The Companion Abdullah ibn Umar reported:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as one Saaʿ of dates or one Saaʿ of barley for every Muslim, free or slave, male or female, young or old.”

Today, scholars calculate the equivalent value of this food amount and allow Muslims to give its monetary value so that organizations can distribute food where it is most needed.

How Much is Zakat al-Fitr in 2026?

Giving earlier during Ramadan allows charities to prepare and distribute food to families in time for Eid.
